ISSUES OF CONCERN

  • Unnecessary Gag Grouper closure

  • Unnecessary Red Snapper closure

  • use of fatally flawed data for stock assessments

  • Use of fatally flawed data for management decisions

  • ACL (Annual Catch Limit) development

  • Development of new recreational data collection system management

  • Stock assessment 'models' ignoring standard benchmarks (Catch Per Unit of Effort CPUE, for example).

  • Unnecessary denial of the OPPORTUNITY to fish

  • ANTI-FISHING groups and efforts*

*An example of an anti-fishing effort.

Note the use of the word "depleted".  It is inflammatory yet simply untrue.

"Considerable ecological concerns?"  Again, inflammatory and untrue.

When fish are spawning, they usually are not eating much.  The biggest threat to spawning aggregations of fish comes from large scale netting of the aggregations.

Details About Grouper

all grouper

Eco Details

  • Several species of grouper are severely depleted.

  • One reason for their dwindling numbers is their highly unusual mating ritual: mature fish come together to spawn in huge numbers that make easy targets for fishing vessels. This removes many reproducing fish and threatens the recovery of depleted populations.

  • Commercial and recreational fishing of nassau grouper and goliath grouper (jewfish) are now prohibited in U.S. waters.

Health Details

This is an Eco-Worst choice. If you decide to eat it, we recommend the following due to elevated mercury levels:

  • Women should eat no more than 3 meals per month

  • Men should eat no more than 2 meals per month

  • Kids age 6-12 should eat no more than 2 meals per month

  • Kids up to age 6 should eat no more than 1 meal per month
