3/16/11 Secret
meeting being held in St. Petersburg?
A hastily,
and apparently secretly scheduled
, ) meeting on ‘timeliness of data’ continues
today in St. Petersburg, FL at the downtown Hilton. While
there are National Marine Fisheries Service people from all
over the US, as well as EDF, Pew and Ocean Conservancy,
along with two cca people who each have a history of selling out
the recreational angler, there is ZERO representation of the
real private recreational angler
() and certainly no private
anglers from Florida. Why is an avowed sector
separation disciple, (a charter captain and commercial
permit holder) on a panel that concerns PRIVATE RECREATIONAL
ANGLERS? WHO is behind this?
This appears to
be a meeting set up to legitimize the mismanagement of our
recreational fisheries by the National Marine Fisheries
Service. It also appears to be another attempt at cramming
sector separation and catch shares down our throats.
Why would the
head of Pew’s campaign to end ‘overfishing’ be the leader of
a breakout discussion on the Gulf and Caribbean fisheries?
What insight could she possibly lend? Agenda driven, Pew
continues to advocate shutting down fisheries with their media campaign.
Damn the truth: Full ahead on the agenda!
Why would the
meeting be held at a time when KEY people from Florida’s FWC
and other agencies are at other meetings? Who conducted the
pre-meeting ‘survey’? Was the public properly notified of
this meeting?
The FRA will
broadcast a half hour or so this morning, around 9:30 AM,
from the meeting. See the broadcast below.
Get ready for the
next round of phone calls. Call your congressional
representative and tell them to oppose the funding request
for catch shares. There is a House budget hearing on March
30 to get nearly $40 million dollars for catch shares in
2012, while cutting the science and data collection budget
in half. This needs to be stopped. GET THE
ACTION PLAN! TAKE ACTION NOW!
Bag limits and size
limits work well as recreational management tools. These
tools have the least impact on our opportunity to fish.
Trip limits work well for commercial fisheries by limiting
overcapitalization.
Don’t be fooled
by ‘fishing’ groups that purport to protect your rights.
The original FISHING RIGHTS ALLIANCE has ALWAYS advocated
for your rights to sound management of and access to your
fisheries.
